In our ongoing process of intentionally designing business practices, we are today introducing our equipment policy. We learned accumulating things is even easier as an organization than it is as an individual. In a phase of scaling up, new equipment is purchased, but when scaling down we are left with those physical remains.

Business development   The business is progressing steadily, but our revenue is not growing fast enough to cover costs as they are. We had a great quarter, where we covered around 44% of our expenses with our own income.

Research articles depict a destination, but not its journey. The journey is the messy middle that not everybody wants to know, but this garden of forking paths has substantial consequences for results. Because information often gets relegated to supplemental materials or is unavailable upon request, we often cannot know the actual research journey even if we wanted to.

We recently completed an accessibility audit, and while things aren’t perfectly accessible, we know where to focus our energy. I firmly believe accessibility does more for a product than expanding the pool of potential users, but also serves as an idealized baseline of design and engineering.

This is a conscious choice regarding the security of both our internal communications and the security of information people share with us. I founded Liberate Science in October 2019 to realise ResearchEquals. Thanks to the Shuttleworth Foundation’s support over the past three years, ResearchEquals now exists and we have been in production for 10 months — since then we’ve had zero downtime! We will continue to develop ways for you to make your research work visible and are committed to doing that for the long haul.

Introducing Liberate Science Labs

The past six months we consulted for the Meta-Research Center on their NWO Open Science Fund project, aimed at detecting privacy violations in datasets. You can now use the web app we built and the R package we developed to scan your datasets and prevent sharing privacy violations.  Together with prof. dr. Jelte Wicherts and dr. Rick Klein, we wrote the original grant proposal to improve scanning for potential privacy violations in datasets.

We will be organizing the 2023 edition of the Open Publishing Festival together with Coko. Save the date: 13-17 November 2023.  Organizing the Open Publishing Festival aligns perfectly our virtual-first event policy. We got inspired by the Festival at the start of the pandemic, and are excited we will co-organize it. Last year, we established Liberate Science’s baseline environmental impact, estimating around 6 000 kilos of carbon dioxide equivalent (or 6 mtCO2e) of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the years 2019 and 2020. For 2021, we calculated 3.29 mtCO2e – a welcome reduction (-48% overall, -30% compared to 2020). In part, this reduction is because of a smaller team and that we didn’t need (or want) to update any of our devices or office furniture.

Creating tools isn’t the biggest challenge, the biggest challenge is getting people to use them (Brian Nosek) We want people to know about ResearchEquals, so that they can use it to publish how they know, instead of what they know. Our launch in February 2022 gave ResearchEquals a boost, and now we wanted to try out something new: We dipped our toes into the marketing waters!

With the recent announcement that Hypergraph will evolve into a web publishing platform for research modules (with a new name forthcoming), Liberate Science also signed up to become a member of CrossRef. This means we'll start issuing ("minting") Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for research modules in the near future. A clear and long-term strategy for this is valuable, and I want to share that journey openly.

Almost a year ago we introduced a way to publish research modules with Hypergraph (Beta). Research modules are a publishing unit where the researcher decides what gets published with links between subsequent modules. These can be complete manuscripts but also datasets with linked code, audio files with linked transcripts, 3D models with linked revisions, or anything else you may produce during your research.

We (semi)recently shipped our integration Research Organization Registry (ROR) for ResearchEquals! ROR is the ORCID for institutions, allowing researchers to easily identify themselves as being affiliated to certain organizations. The climate crisis demands immediate action, in order to prevent every bit of warming we can. Organizations are big emitters, because they consume, spend, and grow — a lot. All of those economic activities are strongly coupled with emissions. We do our emission assessments because that information is key to taking informed action. Our previous assessments in 2019, 2020, and 2021 already influenced our equipment policy and event policy.

It is clear to us that what we are doing with ResearchEquals is not a technological change, it is a social one — that means your involvement matters. What is a supporting membership? We started running Twitter bots in 2017, when Liberate Science was only a side project. First we launched the PsyArxiv bot. Later, we launched bots for the MetaArxiv (2020) and EdArxiv (2021) preprint servers. Six years in, we are shutting down these Twitter bots.

In 2019, I was at the University of Delaware as a PhD student in social psychology, looking for ways to make my research more open.

Copyright is automatic: You create something and it will have copyright. This blog, just by writing it will have copyright. Even your doodles. It is the contract without paper trail. That also means: Without any intervention, nobody will be able to legally copy it.  The interventions to make that copyright more workable are important in open movements. Such interventions provide the legal certainty to reuse whatever it is you are interested in.

Just a few weeks ago we reflected on the year 2022 — with those positive results we find the energy to make 2023 another resultful one. In this blog post, we outline how we are planning to move forward this year.

We are piloting a four week peer learning programme for early career researchers in February 2023. Composed of seven sessions, ResearchEquals Cohorts will learn how to use ResearchEquals to share their research process and connect with peers going through the same learning process. A peer learning programme helps learn things in a social setting, where doing it alone can be too intimidating, too much, or not fun enough.

As we are about to start a new calendar and fiscal year, it is helpful to reflect on how we’ve done in the past year. Reflection is a helpful tool to celebrate achievements and to give feedback to ourselves, maybe even identify patterns we cannot see in the moment. 2022 was a big year for us at Liberate Science! We’ve achieved a lot with a small team.

ResearchEquals is a new publishing platform for research modules, developed by Liberate Science. Instead of publishing entire projects as papers, researchers publish their process, sharing the building blocks of research continuously and in chronological order.

KU Leuven is now an inaugural supporting member of ResearchEquals, sustaining and governing the development of modular publishing. As part of their commitment to Open Science, KU Leuven supports sustainable implementations of Open Access and Open Science through the KU Leuven Fund for Fair OA. The fund is usually only available to non-profits, but ResearchEquals’ governance convinced KU Leuven to support a for-profit initiative.
