Bastian Greshake Tzovaras is an open/citizen science activist and researcher with a background in biology and bioinformatics. He worked as a senior researcher at The Alan Turing Institute and Inserm. In 2011, he founded openSNP. He was awarded a PhD in Bioinformatics in 2018. In 2017 he joined the Open Humans Foundation as the Director of Research.

Having recently moved from Paris to London, it was time to get a new nametag for our dog Ohana – as the old one still displayed Eugenia’s old, French phone number. This wasn’t great as many folks don’t have phone contracts that allow calling abroad (thanks Brexit?).  Ohana’s old name tag was custom-made with a laser cutter – for both cutting the shape and adding her name and the phone number.

If you have spent any time on Mastodon and are intested in data visualisations, geography, RStats, or any of the intersections thereof, you are likely to have seen the stunningly beautiful 3D map visualisations that @terence has been creating with the rayshader package. I have been itching to get an excuse to play around more with this myself, and finally found a lovely one within the context of another little project.

In April 2023, I went to Argentina with the main reason being attending the 7th CSVconf in Buenos Aires. But of course we also went to visit Eugenia’s family over Easter. And we also managed to squeeze in some Lecturers Without Borders while there, even one in German for myself! Between all of these things we also found some time off for sightseeing.

The COVID-19 confinement in Paris and France at large lasted from March 17th to May 11th, with comparatively strict measures on when you could leave your house, where you could go and for how long &amp; when you could be outside. As a result a lot of folks, including me were forced to drastically change their daily routines, shifting to a home office approach.

Paris came out on 2020-06-06 for local #blacklivesmatter protests today. A part of it took place in front of the US embassy at Place de la Concorde, with the police fencing off the area widely. US Senator Kamala Harris held the launch rally of her campaign for US Presidential election in Oakland on Sunday, January 27th in Downtown Oakland. A crowd of around 20,000 people showed up, filling the streets around city hall at Frank H. Ogawa Plaza. . After semi-accidentally ending up at SantaCon in San Francisco last weekend, I was wondering how I could geo-tag my photos more easily. If you’re only taking pictures with your smartphone, that’s not much of an issue as the internal GPS applies the metadata automatically. But lots of modern cameras still don’t come with an internal GPS or require some ridiculous add-ons.

On November 8, 2018 the Camp Fire in Butte County started and wasn’t contained until November 25, 2018. With at least 88 dead, 62,053 ha covered by the fire and over 18,000 destroyed structures it was the deadliest and most destructive wildfire in California so far. Over 52,000 people had to evacuate their homes. Soon, the smoke of the fires reached down to the Bay Area, leading to an increase in air pollution.

In the last blog post, I had mentioned that I was looking to move away some of my personal code hosting away from GitHub (GH), to avoid being locked in into yet another tech giant. Instead, I wanted to move to a proper free alternative. On Mastodon, lots of folks recommended checking out Codeberg as a potential alternative that is based on forgejo and provides static page hosting.

Being more of a dog-person (or to stay in *OkCupid* lingo *likes dogs,
has cats*) I was sad when I saw that the
*[CatterPlots](https://github.com/Gibbsdavidl/CatterPlots)* made their
rounds on Twitter again this week, as there's still no dog-centric
alternative if you're an *R*-faring data visualizer. In order to dry my
tears I went over to [dog_rates](https://twitter.com/dog_rates) for some
binge dog-watching. And then I wondered, aren't these puppers all
getting cuter and cuter? Luckily this is easy to check, thanks to the
excellent, objective, and above all numeric ratings applied by
*dog_rates*. So h\*ck, why not give it a try?

As there are only little over 3500 tweets for *dog_rates*, one can
nearly scrape all the ratings done out since the beginning in late 2015
through Twitter's API. Then one just needs to filter out the retweets
(as we don't want to count any doggo twice) and now we can look at all
valid ratings, with a valid rating being everything that's some numeric
value that's followed by */10*. And that's it, you're good to go to
analyze how cute those puppers are! Doing this one ends up with around
1,500 rated dogs, posted between 2015-12-03 and 2017-02-16.

And the first naive scatterplot shows us only one clear thing: Atticus
is a very good (and extremely patriotic) dog. But if we, just for the
sake of data resolution, exclude him for a tiny second we can see that
there's a clear trend towards cuter dogs with basically all puppers
taking at least 11/10 these days. That totally smells like [the canine
Flynn effect](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flynn_effect) to me!

The dogsplot shows that trend even better. I'll leave it up to you to
calculate in which year we can't rate dogs any longer as Twitter will
not have enough characters to fit the complete rating. At least we'll
have something to look forward to during these times.

But having 1,500 rated dogs gives you the opportunity for something
else, as all of these dogs not only come with their rating, but also
with a picture of themselves. And most of them you can even easily
download through the *Twitter* API as well. If you're now thinking
*Barkificial Intelligence*, then you're totally right! So I went and
downloaded the images for \~1,200 of those dogs and labelled them with
their respective rating. As the distribution of the dogs is so skewed I
limited myself to the six categories \<9/10 and 9-13/13. From there on
it was just following the *[Tensorflow for
Dog-Lovers](https://codelabs.developers.google.com/codelabs/tensorflow-for-poets/)*
tutorial. But looking at the test accuracy tells us that, despite all
the grand claims for *Deep Learning*, it's just not ready yet to
accurately rate dogs: `Final test accuracy = 34.4%`{.language-plaintext
.highlighter-rouge}. So, rest assured dog raters all over the world,
robots are not yet coming to take your jobs.
