Screenshot: deutsche-digitale-bibliothek.de Seit knapp einem Jahr steht die Deutsche Digitale Bibliothek als Betaversion online, seit Montag nun bietet sie auch eine API an. Über die Schnittstelle können Entwickler Daten aus dem Katalog der DDB auslesen und für weitere Anwendungen verwenden.

In an exciting new development, Europe PMC now provides direct links from articles to relevant externally held information, and enables third parties to suggest relevant resources that enrich our existing content. The External Links Service is a mechanism for people to publish links from articles in Europe PMC to related information or tools.

Last Saturday I went to Hack4Ac – a hackday in London bringing together many sections of the academic community in pursuit of two goals: To demonstrate the value of the CC-BY licence within academia. We are interested in supporting innovations around and on top of the literature. To reach out to academics who are keen to learn or improve their programming skills to better their research.

In the last 2 weeks I’ve given talks in Brussels & Amsterdam. The first one was given during a European Commission (Brussels) working group meeting on Text & Data Mining. There were perhaps only ~30 people in the room for that. The second presentation was given just a few days ago at Beyond The PDF 2 (#btpdf2) in Amsterdam.

Few things have annoyed be as much as the following post on TAXACOM:I'm trying to work out why this seemingly innocuous post made me so mad. I think this is because I think this fundamentally framing the question the wrong way. Surely the goal is to have a list of names that is global in scope, well documented, and freely usable by all without restriction? Surely we want open and free access to fundamental biodiversity data?

Politik, Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft könnten von offenen Daten profitieren, wirbt Ökonom Rufus Pollock im Interview mit iRights.info. Man müsse aber genau zwischen wirklich offenen und nur geteilten, öffentlich einsehbaren Daten unterscheiden. Es zeichne sich eine Trendwende zu mehr offenen Daten ab. Zur Person: Rufus Pollock ist Ökonom und einer der Gründer und Leiter der Open Knowledge Foundation.
