We are in the midst of a furious battle over copyright and authors’ rights on both sides of the Atlantic. Like every generation, we are historically blinkered. We think that the new digital technologies of transmission are so revolutionary that they have created an unprecedented situation. But in fact such battles are almost three centuries old.
