One of the judges for the Elsevier Article 2.0 Contest is Andrew Perry, whose blog has some posts on Noel O'Boyle's OpenRef idea (see DOI or DOH? Proposal for a RESTful unique identifier for papers). Andrew discusses some implementations he has come up with, and compares OpenRef with OpenURL.

Following on from adding specimens to my OpenURL resolver, I've added support for GenBank records. Either an OpenURL request such as http://bioguid.info/openurl?id=genbank:DQ502033, or the short URL http://bioguid.info/genbank/DQ502033 will resolve the GenBank record for accession number DQ502033.

As part of the slow rebuild of bioguid.info, and as part of the Challenge, I've started making an OpenURL resolver for specimens. Partly this is just a wrapper around DiGIR providers, but it's also a response to the lack of GUIDs for specimens.

In case I forget how to do this, and as an example of how easy it is to get sucked into a black hole of programming micro-details, I spent a hour or more trying to figure out how to handle Japanese characters.I'm building a database of publications linked to taxonomic names, and I'm interested in linking to electronic versions of those publications.

Tom Pasley recently drew my attention to CrossRef's addition of a XML format parameter to their OpenURL resolver.

CrossRef have released a tool for bloggers to look up DOIs and insert them into blog posts:So far the tool is only available for WordPress blogs.

Following on from the discussion of BHL and DOIs, I stumbled across some remarkable work by Robert Cameron at SFU. Cameron has developed Universal Serial Item Names (USIN). The approach is spelled out in detail in Towards Universal Serial Item Names (also on Scribd). This lengthy document deals with how to develop user-friendly identifiers for journal articles, books, and other documents.

OK, we're on a roll. After adding Journal of Arachnology and Pysche to my OpenURL resolver, I've no added the American Museum of Natural History's Bulletins and Novitates . In an act of great generosity, the AMNH has placed its publications on a freely accessible DSpace server.

Playing with the recently released "Catalogue of Life" CD, and pondering Charles Hussey's recent post to TAXACOM about the "European Virtual Library of Taxonomic Literature (E-ViTL)" (part of EDIT) has got me thinking more and more about how primitive our handling of taxonomic literature is, and how it cripples the utility of taxonomic databases such as the Catalogue of Life.
