Whenever I write a complicated document, such as my submission to the Select Committee on open access, I get Matt to do an editing pass before I finalise it. That’s always worthwhile, but I have to be careful not to just blindly hit the Accept All Changes button.

Wiley are really pushing their expensive hybrid Open Access option ‘Online Open‘ that does not represent value for money in my opinion – it’s US$3000 for most journals which is rather a lot.

Die sechsköpfige „Expertenkommission für Forschung und Innovation“ (EFI), die die Bundesregierung seit 2006 mit Analysen und Empfehlungen berät, hat ihr Jahresgutachten 2013 zur Leistungsfähigkeit Deutschlands veröffentlicht (PDF). Erfreulich ist, dass die Expertinnen und Experten in ihrem diesjährigen Gutachten auch das Thema Open Access und dessen Relevanz für die Innovationsfähigkeit aufgreifen.
Die SPD-Bundestagsfraktion hat unter dem Titel “Freier Zugang zu öffentlich finanzierten Forschungsergebnissen” (BR-Drs. 17/12300) einen Antrag zu Open Access in den Bundestag eingebracht. Darin wird die geplante Verankerung von Open Access im kommenden Forschungsrahmenprogramm in HORIZON 2020 begrüßt. Well, yesterday was insane. In the morning, we had the UK House of Lords report on its inquiry into open access: fearful, compromised, regressive, and representing the latest stage in the inexorable defanging of RCUK’s policy. I happened to be going out yesterday evening; when I left the house it had been the worst day for open access in recent memory.
