You may know the dark mode from your mobile phone or elsewhere. It’s basically a theme that can be activated, but also can be a system-wide default. Most browsers do also support this setting - and we as web developers can read these preferences (Firefox) and use media queries to apply a dark theme for our website. Note that this is not togglable, as some JavaScript solutions offer this feature, but only reacting to the browser preference.

Spam just doesn’t die. Every major mail provider has really good spam filters in place, as do the common mail clients. Nontheless, there seem to be enough people reading – and acting on – spam mail to make it a profitable business. No matter how much we hate it, we need to deal with spam. Better than having a good spam filter is not to be spammed in the first place.

One of the things I'm enjoying about the Australian Faunal Directory on CouchDB is the chance to play with some ideas without worrying about breaking lots of code or, indeed, upsetting any users ('cos, let's face it, there aren't any). As a result, I can start to play with ideas that may one day find their way into other projects. One of these ideas is to use quantum treemaps to display an author's publications.

I would prefer to avoid Microsoft-bashing, but today I've spent time trying to get my tree viewer to work under Internet Explorer 6 and 7, and it's hell. Here are the problems I've had to deal with: Empty DIV bug On IE 6 the top of the scrollbar overlapped the transparent area when the page first loads.
