**Call for Proposals: The IJDT invites submissions of papers to be

Media industries, media services and companies continue to evolve,
creating important challenges for policymakers and regulators globally.
Many traditional media are impacted, and some may be facing a bleak
economic future. New, online networks are exploring new business models
for producing news and entertainment. Main drivers for this
transformation are globalisation, digitalisation and technological
convergence. Socio-cultural media policy objectives, striving to
safeguard pluralism, diversity and national culture are battling for
prominence with the economic and industrial imperatives of a global free
market and open competition. Free market media systems advocate freedom
of expression, allowing consumers open market pricing. Critics argue
that under a free market capitalist system there is concentration of
power and information asymmetry, while public service content is scarce.
Is intervention by government policy needed to address these concerns,
or is media regulation a thing of the past in the converged digital era?

There is certainly a question of regulatory capacity and remit in the
online world. The initial light-touch 'network' governance of the
internet is under pressure from the tech giants Netflix, Facebook,
Twitter, Google, Apple, Microsoft and Amazon. The size and internet
presence of these firms has brought issuesof piracy and abuse of
copyright to public attention. Do these corporations bear any
responsibility for even inadvertently facilitating the increased ease of
distribution of terrorist propaganda, hate speech, violence and
harassment, and online bullying? Should the current regulatory policy
continue? What new national and supranational policy measures might
address these issues? Regulating Facebook and Twitter -- something
unthinkable a few years ago -- is now openly discussed. Should
policy-makers perceive these large multi-national conglomerates as
internet intermediaries or media companies?

We invite works to reflect and critically investigate media policies for
the future,in relation to both prevailing systems of communication and
the systems now emerging around the application of online networks, the
rise of cloud computing, and the internet of things. In exploring the
implications of media and communication in an interconnected world, we
also welcome analysis that reassesses and reimagines sustainability in
relation to media openness, transparency, accessibility, and the
re-composition of media power. We request submissions focussed on
current and future policy topics in an open way, and seek many points of
view.

The future facing theme of this Call for Papers signals the broadened
scope ofthe /International Journal of Digital Television/that goes
beyond digital television to incorporate emerging wider socio-cultural,
technological, regulatory and political questions such as the role of
'digital citizens', the regulatory environment for the new platform
industry, and the role of state regulation in an increasingly global
media industry.

We invite you to celebrate the 10\^th year of the Journal with us and to
take a look into the future of media policy.

##### Submissions

Format: All proposals must include a title, up to 8 keywords, author
name(s), institutional affiliation(s) and full contact information
(mailing address, email address, and telephone number).

Applicants must submit a 300-500 words abstract by **February 9th,
2018**. The full paper of between 6-8,000 words (including references)
should be submitted by **August 31st, 2018**.

CfP: Special Issue of International Journal of Digital Television (IJDT) “Media and Communication Policies in a Digital World”. Deadline: Feb 09, 2018.

In the wake of a successful multidisciplinary and international
conference on the intersections between popular culture and notions of
place held at Erasmus University Rotterdam (5-7th of April 2017) and
initial interest from a reputable academic publisher, contributions are
being welcomed for an edited volume entitled: *Locating Imagination.
Popular Culture, Tourism & Belonging*.

As processes of globalization are ongoing, people have become more
mobile than ever before. Not only does the increasingly ubiquitous
presence of popular media culture facilitate imaginary travel to faraway
places, but also stimulates a corresponding desire to actually
experience the places connected to movies, TV-series, music, literature
and video-games in person. Rapid increases in tourism towards places
related to *The Lord of the Rings* in New-Zealand, *Harry Potter* in the
United Kingdom and *Game of Thrones* in Croatia and Northern Ireland are
just a few eye-catching examples of the increasingly intertwined nature
of media, culture and place.

This volume intends to provide a timely, critical, integrated and
multidisciplinary account of the multifaceted ways in which media,
culture and place intertwine in an increasingly globalizing and
multi-mediatized world. As such, we are seeking cutting-edge,
empirically rich contributions from scholars across disciplines,
including media studies, literary studies, fan studies, ethnomusicology,
popular music studies, cultural geography, tourism studies, cultural
sociology and place- & destination management, amongst others. We invite
chapters that address central themes around the intersections of
(popular) culture, place, tourism and belonging, such as:

- Fan pilgrimages
- Place identity and popular culture
- Contemporary literary tourism
- Music tourism
- Historical media tourism
- Themed and simulated spaces
- Music festivals
- Video-game-inspired tourism
- Virtual tourism
- Media- and fan conventions
- Transmedia marketing and tourism
- Place and storytelling
- Media tourism in the media

We welcome suggestions for theoretically informed chapters based on
qualitative or quantitative empirical research of around 6.000 words.

REVISITING NOSTALGIA AND THE HYPERREAL  
A Symposium at Oxford Brookes University

Saturday January 13th 2018

This one day symposium aims to re-examine the discourse, debates, and
products of the hyperreal in the light of contemporary media culture's
nostalgic impulses. Nostalgia is now a keystone in transnational popular
culture -- from the Instagram-framed figure of the urban hipster, the
lifestyle promises of women's magazines to the re-boot of the infinitely
nostalgic Star Wars franchise. Just as nostalgia haunts media culture,
it has also prompted us to look back towards the cultural theory that
first began flagging up the nostalgic mode of those cultural products.

It has been approximately 40 years since Umberto Eco first travelled in
hyperreality and Jean Baudrillard ordered the simulacra; it has been
almost 20 years since Morpheus offered Neo the choice between a red or
blue pill in The Matrix. While scholarly interest in these seminal texts
has trailed off somewhat, both nostalgia and the hyperreal are urgently
relevant in a mediascape populated by 'fake news' and 'alternative
facts.' Now, it seems, is the perfect opportunity to re-visit these
modes and concepts.

We are seeking papers of approximately 15-20 minutes that engage with
the concepts and cultural products marked by nostalgia and the
hyperreal.

We welcome discussions of all media forms (including videogames, music,
film, television, theatre, sport, magazine publishing, fiction, and fine
art) and encourage interdisciplinary approaches. We are particularly
interested in those works that complicate the relationship between
hyperrreality, nostalgia, and postmodernism. In addition to panel
presentations, this day will include brief workshop discussion sessions.

The children's '68: call for papers

This call for papers invites proposals for contributions to a special
issue of the online journal of children's literature and culture Strenae
entitled 'The Children's '68', on the occasion of the fiftieth
anniversary of May '68. This special issue is part of the work of the
international research network The children's '68, led by Dr Sophie
Heywood at the University of Tours InTRu Laboratory, and financed by the
STUDIUM/Marie Skłodowska-Curie Research Fellowship programme 2016/17.

The global upheaval caused by the protest movements around '68
revolutionised social structures, overturned cultural conventions,
challenged political ideologies, and catalysed civil rights activism by
women, gay people and ethnic minorities. Childhood historians stress the
importance of this period in altering the authority structures that
shaped children's lives.

This special issue proposes to analyse '68 as a watershed moment in
children's culture and its related disciplines, following Marwick's
(1998) now canonical definition of '68 as the crystallisation of the
cultural revolution of the 'long sixties' (c.1958-c.1974).

We invite contributors to think about the ways in which children's
culture was a site for artistic and intellectual experimentation, and
how new ways of thinking about childhood emerged in this period. We
encourage contributors to work across disciplinary boundaries and
national borders, in order to open up new ways of understanding the '68
liberation movements and their legacies. With the fiftieth anniversary
of '68 approaching, this special issue aims to ensure the children's
perspective is finally brought to the fore of scholarly debate.

Suggested topics include:

•       experimental ideas of children and childhood;  
•       how cultural products promoted children's rights around '68;  
•       children's counter-culture and anti-censorship;  
•       feminism and children's culture around '68  
•       children's participation in and access to culture around '68;  
•       the immediate precursors leading to the children's '68;  
•       how the children's '68 revisited avant-garde movements (eg.
surrealism, pop art, Bauhaus, new realism);  
•       the aesthetics of counter-culture for and by children;  
•       the cross-fertilisations between counter-culture and children's
culture around '68.

We are particularly interested to receive proposals for articles
relating to the former Eastern bloc countries, especially
Czechoslovakia.

Proposals (500 words maximum), in English or French should be sent
before 1 December 2016 to the journal Strenae: strenae@revues.org, along
with a short biography and bibliography.

Proposals will be reviewed by the Children's '68 team, and the editorial
board of the journal. Authors will be promptly notified of the
acceptance or rejection of their proposal. Full articles (30,000
characters, including spaces, maximum) are to be submitted by 1 July
2017. Articles will be accepted in English or French.

Publication is scheduled for May 2018.
