**Call for submissions**

This one-day BSA Early Career Forum event provides an
inter/cross-disciplinary platform to explore different ways we come to
know, understand, collaborate on and communicate research of the
gendered nature of sports media, in particular the representation of
femininity. It will bring together early career researchers and
academics from range of disciplines (including, but not limited to,
sociology, cultural studies, human geography and politics) who are
interested in exploring the construction of gendered identity in modern
mediated sport, and who would like to make an ongoing contribution to an
inter-disciplinary understanding of sports media.

**Submissions: **We welcome 15-minute papers, multi-media or documentary
presentations which address the study of the gendered nature of sports
media, including but not limited to such topics as:

- Methodological innovation
- Pathways to inter-disciplinary collaboration
- Sharing outcomes with media practitioners
- Gender bias in sports media industries
- Sports media representation of female non-athletes
- Sports media, gender and race
- The impact of the \#MeToo and \#TimesUp movements in Sports media
- Inclusive and exclusive framing of trans athletes

It is hoped that the symposium will lead to a special edition of Ethical
Space: The International Journal of Communication Ethics.

To submit a proposal/abstract please send a title, a 200 word abstract,
five key words associated with your work, the author(s) names,
affiliation, and type of presentation. Please send abstracts in a Word
document (.DOC or .DOCX) as an email attachment and add "Abstract:
Sports media & femininity symposium 2018″ to the email subject header.

While this event is aimed primarily at Early Career academics and
researchers, we welcome people at all stages of their academic careers.
A limited number of bursaries of up to £50 are available to cover travel
expenses for presenters.

fact, 'Stars' have illuminated cinematic screens for over 100 years,
from classic movie stars (Bogart, Bacall, Hepburn, Chaplin) to films
about Hollywood's star factory (*A Star Is Born, What Price Hollywood?*)
to shooting stars (*Deep Impact*), falling stars (*Sunset Boulevard,
Raging Bull*), and stars in 'space, the final frontier' (*Star Trek*) in
a 'galaxy far, far away' (*Star Wars*). Digital video streaming and
binge watching of films and media also re-imagines and creates new
moving image 'stars' transforming the cinematic or televisual
production, distribution, and viewing reception experience. What does
this nostalgic re-imagining of film history and cinematic production of
stars on screen tell us about the cultural moment we find ourselves
in? The 2018 Film and Media History Conference explores the theme of
"Stars and Screen."
