Playing with my eLife Lens-inspired article viewer and some recent articles from ZooKeys I regularly come across articles that are incorrectly marked up. As a quick reminder, my viewer takes the DOI for a ZooKeys article (just append it to http://bionames.org/labs/zookeys-viewer/?doi=, e.g. http://bionames.org/labs/zookeys-viewer/?doi=10.3897/zookeys.316.5132), fetches the corresponding XML and displays the article.Taking the article
Last Saturday I went to Hack4Ac – a hackday in London bringing together many sections of the academic community in pursuit of two goals: To demonstrate the value of the CC-BY licence within academia. We are interested in supporting innovations around and on top of the literature. To reach out to academics who are keen to learn or improve their programming skills to better their research.
One of goals of BioNames is to be more than simply another taxonomic database. In particular, I'm interested in the idea of having a platform for viewing taxonomic publications. One way to think about this is to consider the experience of viewing Wikipedia. For any given page in Wikipedia there will be links to other, related content in Wikipedia.
We were delighted to announce the winners of the Access to Understanding science-writing competition at an awards ceremony held last night (11 March) at The British Library in London. Entrants to the competition were challenged to summarise a cutting-edge research article, communicating in a simple and accessible way what the research is, and why it matters, to an interested, non-specialist audience.
Access to Understanding is a new science-writing competition, developed by Europe PubMed Central and The British Library, aimed at early career researchers and PhD students. The winner will receive an iPad and have their entry published in eLife.
eLife , the new open-access journal for outstanding scientific advancements, has published its first four research articles. First announced in summer 2011, eLife is a researcher-led initiative for the best in science and science communication.
The senior editorial team is today announced for ‘eLife’, the new top-tier, open access research journal to be launched next year with the support of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Max Planck Society and the Wellcome Trust. Read the press release on the Wellcome Trust website.
