Maike Neufend is a scholar specializing in the sociology of knowledge and culture, currently serving as open access officer at the Open-Access-Büro Berlin, affiliated with the Freie Universität Berlin. She completed her studies in sociology, islamic studies, and philosophy in Hamburg and Damascus, earning her PhD in sociology from the International Graduate Centre for the Study of Culture (GCSC) in Gießen in 2021. Her academic journey includes a research fellowship at the Centre for Near and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Marburg from 2011-2015/2017-2020, as well as a doctoral fellowship at the Orient Institute Beirut. In her research, Maike Neufend delves into the social dimension of knowledge by exploring intellectual, aesthetic, and scholarly practices. Her publications include a book on the intellectual defence of reason against European colonial domination (2012), contributions on knowledge production through reason and wonder (2017) and visual practices (2019), and a second book on the social practices of self-knowledge (2022). Her current research centers on the exploration of affective knowledge production, exemplified through the study of taste. Maike Neufend is also co-founder and former editor of the peer-reviewed open-access journal "Middle East - Topics & Arguments" (2011-2021), accessible at https://meta-journal.net. Her interests in scholarly publishing extend to the realms of decolonial and radical open access, investigating how knowledge equity is enacted in science communication and through policies.
