💡 This is a post in a series of Stories From My PhD. For background on this series, read the announcement post. I have been to a few dozen dissertation defenses over the past decade. As a result of attending PhD defenses on a fairly regular basis with the same folk, their procedures got discussed. A lot. This story is about a situation where a university's own arbitrary regulations are arbitrarily not applied.

Research communication comes in many forms — traditional text based publishing cannot accommodate to all the needs of new, non text-based forms of communication. Audio-articles, also called pubcasts, are one such form. We’re happy to announce ResearchEquals is partnering with PubCasts to stimulate,  develop, and support the publication of audio-articles in our community.

When we think of gender gaps in academia or society more broadly, we may think of very specific issues. But gender gaps are mere symptoms, with a common cause: The patriarchy. This is a system where maleness ultimately dominates, at the cost of everyone.

Open science has gained significant momentum over the past few years, with various movements and initiatives emerging to promote sharing of scientific knowledge, data, and resources with the wider community. Open science is a broad term encompassing a range of practices that strive to increase transparency, inclusivity, and accessibility in science.

Most researchers will only think of their Curriculum Vitae (CV) when an application deadline is nearing. Yet a recent wave of initiatives to introduce so-called narrative CV formats by research funding bodies and universities across Europe have created debate about the affordances of an otherwise taken-for-granted bureaucratic genre.

It is clear to us that what we are doing with ResearchEquals is not a technological change, it is a social one — that means your involvement matters. What is a supporting membership? Supporting memberships are a community based approach to how ResearchEquals evolves.
