With the recent announcement that Hypergraph will evolve into a web publishing platform for research modules (with a new name forthcoming), Liberate Science also signed up to become a member of CrossRef. This means we'll start issuing ("minting") Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) for research modules in the near future. A clear and long-term strategy for this is valuable, and I want to share that journey openly.
Today CWTS published its open science policy on its website. This policy, which formally came into effect on September 1 this year, is the outcome of a co-creation process in which many CWTS colleagues participated in a period of one and a half years. No-one is quite sure of the total number of scholarly publications within the global corpus. Indeed that number will be strongly influenced by the degree to which, in addition to books and journal articles, one includes within the definition of scholarly publications ‘grey literature’ such as reports published by official bodies, patents, etc.

Almost a year ago we introduced a way to publish research modules with Hypergraph (Beta). Research modules are a publishing unit where the researcher decides what gets published with links between subsequent modules. These can be complete manuscripts but also datasets with linked code, audio files with linked transcripts, 3D models with linked revisions, or anything else you may produce during your research.
It’s been a month since the announcement of 1.09 Billion Citations available in the July 2021 release of COCI, the OpenCitations Index of Crossref open DOI-to-DOI citations. We’re now proud to announce the September 2021 release of COCI, which is based on open references to works with DOIs within the Crossref dump dated August 2021.
Six years ago, Juan Pablo Alperin and Stefanie Haustein sat down at a bar in Amsterdam after a full day of participating in a conference. They came for a drink and an opportunity to connect over shared interests, but they left with an ambitious plan that would change both of their careers.
