together scholars, policy-makers and regulators to discuss issues of
political interference and economic pressures that continue to challenge
the development of democratic media cultures in Europe.]{lang="en-GB"}
[In European media tradition, public service media (PSM) has been
considered vital to European democracy. With its main duty to serve the
public interest, throughout the territory and for the whole of the
population of the country in which it is established, PSM has provided
balance and ensured that the needs of all minorities are met. Public
service television makes news more accessible for the population,
fosters higher news consumption and results in better knowledge of
public affairs in the population.]{lang="en-GB"}

[R]{lang="en-GB"}[ecent years have brought about new challenges to media
landscapes across Europe. Pressures from the commercial broadcasting and
declining audiences have been compounded by political and financial
pressures that have come to question ]{lang="en-GB"}[the very existence,
role and purpose of public service broadcasting.
]{lang="en-GB"}[Numerous ]{lang="en-GB"}[violations of public service
media values, including the encroachment on ]{lang="en-GB"}[freedom of
expression, information, media freedom and pluralism,
]{lang="en-GB"}[have been reported ]{lang="en-GB"}[across
Europe]{lang="en-GB"}[. There is widespread involvement of governments
in the deterioration of conditions in which media, including public
service broadcasting, functions. ]{lang="en-GB"}

One million migrants crossed the borders of Europe in 2015, in, what
came to be known as the "refugee crisis". This Symposium focuses on the
mediation of this "crisis" at a trans-European and local level, in order
to address the questions:

 \* How is "the refugee crisis" communicated in European media?

 \* How do refugees appear in "our" media?

 \* How do border agents use media in their reception of refugees?

Drawing on findings from the "Migration and Media" research project,
funded by the Department of Media and Communications at LSE, the
Symposium is organized as a series of conversations between LSE scholars
and leading migration and media researchers and practitioners.

The aim of the Symposium is to reflect on the urgent ethico-political
challenges of "the crisis", as these emerge at the intersection of human
mobility, security, care and media. But its aim is also to enable us to
engage with important moments in the mediation of "the crisis". These
moments are addressed through academic work but also through creative
work. The Symposium will close with the Oscar-nominated and Winner of
the Golden Bear at the Berlin film festival 2016 /Fuoccoamare/Fire at
Sea/, by Gianfranco Rosi.
