In a move that will surprise no-one who’s been paying attention, my and Matt’s presentation of vertebral orientation at the 1st Palaeo Virtual Congress is now up as a PeerJ preprint. Sadly, with the end of the conference period on 15th December, the page for my talk has been deleted, along with some interesting comments. But here at SV-POW!, we have no truck with ephemerality, hence this more permanent manifestation of our work.

Die folgende Geschichte fängt mit der Pressemeldung Bundesrat nimmt den Bericht «Die Schweiz 2030» zur Kenntnis vom 16.10.2018 an. Die Schweizerische Bundeskanzlei hat 77 Persönlichkeiten aus verschiedene Branchen und Landesteilen eingeladen, kurz und prägnant wichtige Entwicklungen, die der Bundesrat bei der Festlegung der Bundespolitik berücksichtigen sollte, zu schildern.

Over the last ten years, scientific funding agencies across the globe have implemented policies which force their grant recipients to behave in a compliant way. For instance, the NIH OA policy mandates that research articles describing research they funded must be available via PubMedCentral within 12 months of publication. Other funders and also some institutions have implemented various policies with similar mandates.

Scholastica is a publishing platform that offers support for super-low-cost open-access journals such as Discrete Analysis , led by Tim Gowers. They’re putting together the first Academic-Led Publishing Day on 7 February next year, and as part of the build-up, they kindly invited me to do an interview for them, kicking off their Academic-Led Publishing From the Experts series.

Die cOALition S hat grosse Unterstützung erhalten. Mit dem britischen “Wellcome Trust” und “The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation” sind nun auch zwei grosse private biomedizinische Forschungsförderer an Bord gekommen. Die beiden Förderorganisationen gehörten bisher schon zu den Front-Runners was Open Access anbelangt. Sie unterstützten aber bisher auch das Hybrid Modell.

Die Schweizer Universitäten wollen bis 2024 Open Access für ihre Publikationen erreichen. Dazu organisierte swissuniversities die mit 300 Teilnehmern die bisher grösste nationale OA-Konferenz an der Universität Lausanne. Neben den üblichen Verdächtigen der OA-Szene nahmen erfreulicherweise auch sehr viele Personen aus den höchsten Leitungsebenen des Schweizer Wissenschaftsbetriebs teil.
