**Call for Papers:** Colour -- its specific hues, meanings and
perception -- are a contentious issue in the study of film.  From the
history of its technologies and the production of a 'natural colour'
image to its association with all that is artificial and unreal, the
interpretation of colour has been closely linked to its cultural, social
and historical contexts. *Colour in Context* is a one-day
interdisciplinary symposium and offers a space in which to discuss the
diverse ways in which filmmakers and artists have used colour (and the
strategy of its absence) as a technique of cinematic expression as well
as those who have made a subversive use of colour that is intended to
disrupt cinematic forms of representation in a range of cultural, social
or historical contexts.

We welcome papers on the specificities of colour and its contradictions
in a range of cultural, social or historical contexts. Topics for
consideration include, but are not limited to:

- Colour in the context of a specific theory or work of a theorist/
  philosopher.
- Colour and its contradictions, a context in which colour deviates from
  the expected.
- Cultural and historical contexts of colour in cinema.
- The use of colour/ lighting in exhibition and gallery spaces.
- Colour technologies and design: Gasparcolor, Dufaycolour, classic
  Technicolor to digital media.
- Questions of colour in film archives and their conservation projects.
- Colour and genre: science fiction, non-fiction, melodrama, travel
  films, musicals and /or horror.
- Colour context and perception.
- Colour and textual analysis: in a genre and in the context of *this*
  text.

To submit an abstract, please send the following details -- name,
affiliation, abstract (200 words) and short biographical notes -- to Dr
Liz Watkins <e.i.watkins@leeds.ac.uk> no later than the **deadline:
15^th^ January 2018.**

The *Colour in Context* symposium is funded by the British Association
of Film, Television and Screen Studies. The symposium is organized by
the [Special Interest Group on Colour and
Film](https://colourandfilm.wordpress.com/){target="_blank"}. Symposium
convenors: Liz Watkins and Sarah Street.

**Screening: ** The *Colour in Context* Symposium is organised in
conjunction with a screening and workshop event about *Some People*
(Clive Donner, 1962) at the Watershed, Bristol 24^th^ March 2018. The
screening is organized by the AHRC-funded project *The Eastmancolor
Revolution* *and British Cinema, 1955-85*, which is based at the
Universities of Bristol and East Anglia.

We invite papers that explore protest and resistance in relation to
Brexit Britain and the Trump-era United States. We are interested in
media created *in response* to these seismic periods of political
change, media created in the period *leading up to* them, and media that
more broadly deals with themes related to populism, politics, and power.
As well as discussing media that can be seen as protest or resistance,
this event will consider media forms that fail to resist, or those that
merely hint at protest. In doing this we can also consider the
responsibility of media creators to engage in and respond to political
shifts and crises.

As well as focusing on media texts themselves, the discourses around
them, and the political potentials within them, we wish to consider the
broader ramifications and responsibilities of living through periods of
extreme political turmoil. Do we bring these texts and conversations
into our classrooms? Do we discuss them with family and friends? What is
the role of popular media in creating and facilitating conversations
about social injustice, political participation, and critical literacy?

Our definition of 'media' is broad, including: Television and Film (all
genres); Radio and Podcasts; Social Media, Memes and Viral Videos;
Political Commentary and Punditry; and Print Media, Political Cartoons
and Published Polemics.

How does comedy call attention to, and call out, dominant narratives and
political injustices? How do documentary and political news-shows
present issues from an 'objective' (aka masculine, straight, white,
middle-class) perspective? How do political dramas create a reality with
higher stakes than that which is playing out across the UK and US?  What
does it mean that the President of the USA uses a social media platform
as his main form of communication?

This event will parse these questions, and is interested in any others
that contributors would like to pose. Below is a list of suggested

or to propose themes from your own research and teaching.

##### Keynote Speaker TBC

The organisers are also open to receiving panel submissions (of
approximately 3-4 related papers), and are interested in non-traditional

School of Humanities, Communication and Library Science, University
Carlos III de Madrid, will host the International Interdisciplinary
Conference: THE CITY: IMAGES AND IMAGINARIES.

This conference aims to offer a diverse view of representations of
cities, including the artistic dimensions, as well as the technical,
historical, or urban perspectives. The following central concepts and
their corresponding sub-themes, will be addressed:

- Urban space: configuration, design, the legacy of the past.
- Civic experience in modern times: citizenry, identities,
  sustainability.
- Contemporary cities and their representations: audiovisual, visual
  arts, writing.
