Reflecting on 2024: Celebrating Collaboration and Charting the Future

As 2024 comes to a close, we reflect on a year marked by milestones, progress, and the ever-deepening collaboration with our global community. This year, we celebrated 15 years of DataCite, a journey built on the collective dedication of members, partners, and stakeholders who share our vision of a connected and equitable research ecosystem.

Throughout the year, we focused on enhancing metadata quality, expanding our partnerships, and broadening access to our infrastructure—efforts rooted in our commitment to driving discovery and reuse of research outputs. From advancing the PID Graph and fostering interoperability to supporting initiatives like Make Data Count, ROR, IGSN, RAiD, and DiSSCo, 2024 demonstrated the transformative impact of working together to advance knowledge.

2024 Highlights

• Collaborative Milestones: Our partnerships with ROR, IGSN, and RAiD grew stronger, integrating diverse communities into the global research ecosystem. Initiatives like the PID Graph enriched metadata connections, aligning with the FAIR Principles and enhancing interoperability.
• Global Impact: Targeted outreach led to increased global adoption with over 1,500 organizations across over 60 countries, ensuring greater representation in the research community. The Global Access Fund played a pivotal role in reducing barriers for under-resourced institutions, while our consortium model supports low-cost fees for research organisations in emerging regions.
• Scalability and Innovation: Service enhancements this year prepared us to meet growing demands with over 69 million DOIs (and over 20 million this year alone), ensuring the infrastructure remains robust and reliable. Our focus on metadata enrichment empowered researchers with better tools for tracking impact and reuse.

Building on the momentum of 2024, we're excited to embark on the next chapter of our mission, guided by a clear set of objectives that align with our strategic pillars:

• Metadata Precision and Reuse: By driving metadata completeness and enhancing discovery services, we aim to amplify discoverability and interoperability.
• Scalability and Reliability: With ambitious goals for infrastructure performance and service scalability, we are preparing to support an ever-growing volume of DOI registrations.
• Global Membership Growth: Expanding our community across regions, disciplines, and resource types will ensure an inclusive research ecosystem.
• Strengthened Community Role: As we bolster DataCite's unique position in the research ecosystem, we will focus on partnerships and impact-driven initiatives that advance Open Research principles.
• Commitment to The Principles of Open Scholarly Infrastructure (POSI): Reinforcing sustainable and community-driven infrastructure remains at the core of our mission.
