In this post, we're highlighting three new members whose use of our services illustrates the growing diversity of applications for DataCite DOIs—from environmental data and national infrastructure to scholarly publishing in regional contexts.
Institute for Environment and Nature, Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition (Croatia) – registering DOIs for records and assessments of Croatian wild species.
DataCite plays a key role in facilitating responsible data sharing on important topics such as biodiversity and species protection. By enabling the assignment of DataCite DOIs to threat assessments and datasets within Croatia's Nature Protection Information System and BioAtlas, DataCite ensures traceability, citation, and long-term accessibility of critical environmental data. This approach strengthens the visibility and credibility of the Red List of Croatian Wild Species, supporting both conservation efforts and evidence-based policymaking.

"The Institute for Environment and Nature is an expert analytical body of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Croatia. The institute is, among other assignments, in charge of implementing and developing the Nature Protection Information System.
The Institute maintains the Red List of Croatian Wild Species. Within the Red List, threat assessments are made for selected wild species. Each threat assessment is the work of eminent experts, which is validated by educated reviewers at the Institute for Environment and Nature. Concerned threat assessments are the professional references of the experts who created them. Currently, the Institute is implementing the DOI in the system, following the example of the web portal of the IUCN. After the implementation, each assessment will be provided with a DOI, which will be a part of the assessment citation.
Also, the institute is maintaining BioAtlas – Croatian Living Atlas, in the scope of which every imported dataset will be assigned with a DOI, as well as each user-downloaded dataset. DOIs will be a part of the dataset citation and will be cited in the scientific and expert papers in which the dataset will be used.
This will facilitate visibility, accessibility, and use of the data, but also enable reproducibility of the analyses of the used datasets. Furthermore, increased visibility and accessibility will facilitate future data mobilisation and assessments done by the experts."
Luka Katušić, Head of the Service for Inventory and Assessment
Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition
Ohio Supercomputer Center (United States) – registering DOIs for instruments like supercomputing devices and infrastructure.
The Ohio Supercomputer Center joined DataCite to register DOIs for the tools and computing devices they support, using "Instrument" resource type in the DataCite Metadata Schema.
"At the Ohio Supercomputer Center, our mission is to empower Ohio higher educational institutions, both public and private, as well as private industry, by providing capable, accessible, reliable, and secure computational services enhanced by training, consulting, and research partnerships. We've become a member of DataCite because it gives us the ability to generate persistent identifiers and track their use both by ourselves and our clients, in order to better capture the impact we have on our client community."
Alan Chalker, Director of Strategic Programs
Ohio Supercomputer Center
Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies (Qatar) – registering DOIs for articles and entries in the newly launched Encyclopedia Arabica.
DataCite's metadata schema supports registering DOIs for scholarly articles, enabling persistent access and reliable citation. It also allows the inclusion of metadata in multiple languages, boosting the visibility and discoverability of regional and non-English research. This multilingual capability is especially valuable for initiatives like the Encyclopedia Arabica, helping position Arabic scholarship within global knowledge systems.

"At the Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies, our Encyclopedia Arabica project is committed to producing peer-reviewed, accessible, and authoritative knowledge in Arabic. By registering DOIs for each encyclopedic entry, we ensure long-term digital preservation, global scholarly visibility, and rigorous citation practices—placing Arab scholarship at the heart of international knowledge systems. DataCite's infrastructure empowers us to embed trust, transparency, and traceability into the future of Arabic digital knowledge."
Dr. Mohammad Almasri, Executive Director
Arab Center for Research and Policy Studies
