Fitness benefits of fire-stimulated flowering
Creators & Contributors
Fire enhances the flowering of many species, especially geophytes. This fire-stimulated flowering is now quite well known [1]; however, little is known about its benefits. A recent paper on four mediterrnean geophytes (Asphodelus cerasifer, Dipcadi serotinum, Drimia maritima, and Narcissus assoanus) shows that fire enhanced multiple stages of the plant cycle (Figure 1) [2]. These results provide evidence of the adaptive value of fire-stimulated flowering, which allows plants to exploit the unique abiotic and biotic conditions of the immediate post-fire environment (open space, high resources, novel pollination environment, etc.), and highlight fire as a key driver of plant life-history evolution in Mediterranean ecosystems.
